Athletics at Blakefield
Athletics at Blakefield are part of an abundant selection of co-curricular activities offered at Loyola. The Upper School fields 17 Varsity teams, all in the “A” Conference, and the appropriate number of under squads in each sport. Loyola Middle School fields 15 teams in 12 different sports. Students are not required to take part in organized athletics, but many do. The teams are selected on a competitive basis.
It is our job in the Athletic Department to ensure that our student athletes:
• have coaches of character acting as positive role models,
• play at the most competitive level,
• are well equipped for safety as well as sartorial splendor, and
• have proper facilities.
Sports, although they may imitate life, are NOT life. They are important, but not MOST important. Therefore, it is also our job in the Athletic Department to see that our coaches, athletes and parents keep athletics in the proper perspective. Long after the score is forgotten, how we have behaved as athletes, as coaches, and as fans will be remembered.
We are blessed to have in place the coaches we now have: men and women who give a great deal of their talent and time to our student athletes, often with little personal glory. All of our varsity head coaches are on the faculty at Loyola.
We also have an extensive intramural program, as well as an assortment of non-athletic co-curricular organizations through which your son may learn many of the same leadership skills that are taught on the athletics fields.
