Service

Community work is where spiritual growth and being a man for others takes concrete form. Loyola Blakefield’s Ignatian Service Program makes the concepts of love for the human family and commitment to social justice vivid and relevant. More than an add-on activity, Ignatian Service is an integral part of a Jesuit education and courses through the heart and soul of our curricula.

  • Grade Level Service Work

    Each grade partners with a local organization and members of the class visit and participate in one service day per year with their homeroom. Students visit the following organizations:

    • 6th Grade – Blakehurst Retirement Community
    • 7th Grade – Ridge Ruxton School
    • 8th Grade – Beans and Bread
    • 9th Grade – St. Jerome’s Head Start
    • 10th Grade – Gallagher Services at Gribbin Center
    • 11th Grade – Franciscan Center
  • Senior Service Requirement

    Seniors are required to complete 40 hours of Christian Service before graduation. The Missioning Mass occurs in the spring of their junior year where the students are anointed and blessed. This signifies the beginning of their Ignatian Service experience and they may start working on their graduation requirement. We ask students to choose one organization in which to complete 40 hours of direct service working with a marginalized group. Students are also asked to write a reflection piece on the work they completed. Students who participate in a Loyola Blakefield sponsored summer service trip complete their graduation requirement in one week. 
  • Summer Service Trips

    Loyola sponsors 8-10 service trips each summer. Students apply for the summer service program, interview, and then are selected for one of the service trip groups. During the 2016 summer, students served in Belize, Jamaica, Philadelphia, Camden, West Virginia and Baltimore. Over 100 rising seniors, accompanied by over 20 faculty/staff, completed a summer service trip. 
  • Service Committee

    The SGA Vice President for Service and Ministry leads a group of students in planning service opportunities and fundraisers throughout the school year. The group meets weekly and aims to complete one service project each month. All students and faculty are welcome to attend service committee meetings and events. In the2016-2017 school year, the group plans to sponsor dinner at Baltimore Station, the annual food drive in October, a Halloween party for the children at Paul’s Place, a trip to the Ignatian Family Teach-in for Justice in DC, a Christmas Party for the children of St. Gregory’s the Great, a blanket drive in January, the annual blood drive in February, a social with the elderly in March, and an Easter Party in April. In addition, twice a month, all students are invited to make PB&J sandwiches that are distributed to the homeless through Our Daily Bread.
