Engineering Students Test Soap Box Derby Cars

Mr. Hnatiuk's Intro to Engineering students were tasked with creating their very own Soap Box Derby cars as their final project for the year. These cars are unpowered and completely rely on gravity to move.

After several weeks of designing and testing their creations, they finally had a chance to race them in a time trial on Wednesday, May 16, on a makeshift course along the main driveway connecting campus. Students held two separate events, one without any force applied to the vehicle and one with force applied (via a push from a fellow classmate).

Some creations were quite clever and included everyday items like a skateboard, shopping cart, bicycle wheels, and one was even equipped with an anchor and leaf rake to help with braking. View some of the students' creations via the slideshow below.
