Message from President Day

Dear Loyola Blakefield Community,

The past few days have delivered headlines across the nation that continue a disturbing trend - acts of extreme violence fueled by intense hatred. The news out of Pittsburgh's historic Squirrel Hill neighborhood is the latest mournful reminder that our nation is plagued by persistent and invasive ideologies that not only divide us, but motivate terror and brutality. What took place at the Tree of Life Synagogue was an attack on a community of faith, one that extends across the globe. Loyola Blakefield stands by our Jewish brothers and sisters, and condemns anti-Semitism and hatred in any and all forms.

As a center of faith, Loyola is called to celebrate the richness of diversity in cultural and religious beliefs that exist both within our national borders and throughout the global community. This calls upon us to bear witness to actions that we often cannot explain, but must serve as lessons for the future.

The tragic event at the Tree of Life Synagogue is the result of a world facing the effects of fractured morality, divisiveness, and emboldened cruelty. Loyola Blakefield will continue to do its part to ensure that there is less room for hatred in this world, and more for empathy and love. We need it now more than ever.

As we work to heal from the acts of violence that unceasingly pervade our society, we must remain united against hate and committed to the dignity and protection of people from all faiths and cultures.

Please join us in praying for the 11 victims of the attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue, their families, and all victims of violence.

Psalm 71:1-5
Prayer for Lifelong Protection and Help

In you, O Lord, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;
incline your ear to me and save me.
Be to me a rock of refuge,
a strong fortress, to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.
Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of the unjust and cruel.
For you, O Lord, are my hope,
my trust, O Lord, from my youth.

Together, we are one global community of faith.

Prayerfully,

Anthony Day
