Loyola Speech & Debate Wins Chesapeake District Championship, Qualifies Five for National Tournament

Last Saturday, Loyola Speech & Debate hosted the Chesapeake District Championship for schools in Maryland, Delaware, and DC. The team won the Speech Sweepstakes Award and also received the Cumulative Sweepstakes Award from the National Speech & Debate Association for success at the district championship over a series of years. Also, five Dons qualified to attend the NSDA National Tournament in Dallas in June. Only the top 3% of all speech and debate students nationwide qualify for this tournament each year. Congratulations to Will LaMoure '19, Joey Ghirardelli '19, Kevin Wallner '21, Marlo Lacson '20, and Zach Durkin '20.

Kevin Wallner – District Champion in Humorous Interpretation (National Qualifier)
Jakob Taylor – 3rd Place in Congressional Debate (1st Alternate)
Paul MacDonald – 4th Place in Congressional Debate (2nd Alternate)
Jeffrey Cournoyer – 5th Place in Congressional Debate (3rd Alternate)
Will LaMoure – 2nd Place in Dramatic Interpretation (National Qualifier)
District Champion in United States Extemporaneous Speaking (National Qualifier)
Joey Ghirardelli – 2nd Place in International Extemporaneous Speaking (National Qualifier)
Zach Durkin – 3rd Place in Dramatic Interpretation (1st Alternate)
Mateen Kane – 4th Place in Dramatic Interpretation (2nd Alternate)
Andrew Abraham – 4th Place in Informative Speaking (2nd Alternate)
Marlo Lacson & Zach Durkin – District Champions in Duo Interpretation (National Qualifiers)
Josh Zachariah & Justin Tony – 3rd Place in Duo Interpretation (1st Alternates)
