Varsity Golf Claims MIAA Title

On Saturday, May 18th, the Varsity Golf team took on Calvert Hall at Caves Valley Golf Club with the MIAA championship on the line. Trent Geritz '19 shot 4-under over the 12-hole matchplay format, which led the way over the top-seeded Cardinal squad. Geritz, who will attend the University of Maryland in the fall, outscored his opponent (the reigning MIAA individual champion) 2.5 - 0.5.

On their way to the MIAA title, Loyola knocked off St. Paul's in the semifinal, ending their three-year reign as MIAA champions.

Match Scoring:

Trent Geritz '19/John Peterson '19: W (4.5 - 2.5)
Ryan Kane '19/Pierce Shearin '19: W (5.5 - 1.5)
Matt Smolka '20 /Ethan Jones '19: W (4 - 3)

First-year Head Coach, Mike Messina '86 credited the team's strong will and determination.

"I was truly blessed with the closest thing to a perfect team any coach could ever hope to have. Selfless, hard working, dedicated, and determined are but a few of the accolades that immediately come to mind when I think of these young men. They are a team in every sense of the word. No attitudes or egos with this group. They fought hard all season with and for each other. One of the parents said that I had created a band of brothers with this group. That is truly who and what they are. If you look purely at scores and handicaps, there were a few outstanding programs who probably should have finished ahead of us. However, numbers can’t measure heart. Given the choice between handicaps and heart, I’ll take heart every time. Especially the heart of a Don!"
