Alumni Spotlight - Alex Darnell '10

After graduating from Loyola, Alex Darnell studied at Stevenson University, where he pursued a passion in computer science. After a few semesters, he focused on general studies before switching gears and studying history at Towson University. “At Loyola, Mr. Crawford was my favorite teacher,” said Darnell. “He understood how to make history fun, while making sure that everyone understood the subject at hand. As I pondered going into teaching, he was the ideal role model for what I wanted to be.”

During his time at Blakefield, Alex took advantage of a variety of co-curricular opportunities. He was a spirited member of the intramural flag football program, founded the extremely popular Wii Bowling Club, and was a founding member of “The D&T Show” along with classmate Antonio Barbera. It was Loyola’s first podcast and video program. He also courageously (foolishly?) challenged a stand-out member of the track team to a 100m race (he lost) and then challenged a member of the football team (lost again). “It turned into this big deal. We put up fliers in the hallways promoting the race and had a decent crowd of student spectators. As I look back, that day was an insane amount of fun.”

Alex also recalls Kairos 72 as a transformative experience. “Like many of us, I was not sure what to expect from the retreat,” said Darnell. “It gave me an opportunity to reflect on my life, my relationships with my parents and God, and ultimately gave me a new mindset to make more mature and healthier decisions in my life.”

A self-proclaimed “die-hard” Orioles fan, Alex watches almost every game and keeps up with all aspects of the club including minor league development and player acquisitions. Along with his father, Richard ’75, he is a season ticket holder for the upcoming Bowie Baysox season.
