Owen Fischer '22 Commits to Ohio State University for Lacrosse

Congratulations to recent graduate Owen Fischer '22 who has officially committed to playing Division I Lacrosse at Ohio State University.

As a four-year contributor to Loyola Blakefield's basketball program, his original goal was to play basketball in college. "Last February, AJ Larkin '22 and Billy Dwan '22 told me that Owen wanted to try out for lacrosse as it was his last year at Loyola, and he used to play in middle school," said Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach Gene Ubriaco. "He came out after basketball season ended so we had him practice for a couple days, and we knew right away his athleticism and IQ were going to make us better." He quickly rose in the depth chart, and by varsity lacrosse's game with Haverford in mid-March, he was in the starting defensive midfield rotation. He only got better as he got more practice and coaching under his belt.

Soon after the game against Haverford, Ubriaco started receiving calls from several coaches of top ten DI programs about Owen. It became apparent to Owen that the type of schools he could attend for lacrosse were at a different level than the basketball path he was on. He was obviously late to the recruiting game, but after talking with a bunch of DI programs, he recently decided on Ohio State, which is an incredible lacrosse program in the Big 10.

"We are very proud of him and look at Owen as a big time success story of our program," said Ubriaco. "He is a great example of the power of multi-sport athletes with his willingness to take a chance on trying out for lacrosse and the ability for him to develop so quickly in our program. His path is extremely uncommon and one of the best stories of 2022."
