Freshman Soccer Team Serves at The Baltimore Station

On Monday, September 26, our freshman soccer team traveled to the West Street location of The Baltimore Station to serve more than 40 residents breakfast for dinner. In an effort to exercise the whole player and introduce new Dons to the Ignatian way of proceeding, service has been incorporated into the Freshmen Soccer experience. Some players prepared the meal, from scratch, the prior evening (Sunday), and others finished and served it (pancakes, waffles, baked French toast, scrambled eggs, bacon [pork and turkey], sausage, mixed berries, sliced bananas, yellow cake with buttercream frosting, and salad), sitting down to share a meal with many of them afterward. The Dons had great conversations with interesting, caring, and gracious people, and learned about the ministry of service, spreading love, fellowship, and good will.

"As an Ignatian educator and coach, I am afforded the opportunity to model for my students and players how to be a [young] man for others in the classroom, on the field, and in the world. My players learn new ways to collaborate, improvise, and care for each other, and the results are immediately evidenced in their conversations on the bus ride back to campus and on the soccer pitch. They learn that our work as players on a team is training for our actions as citizens living in a larger community—cultivating the virtues of generosity, service, and labor in the process." – Joe LaBella, Freshman Soccer Head Coach

This is the fourth annual freshman soccer service outing. Other service locations have included St. Vincent's Villa and the Green Towson Alliance.
