Loyola Blakefield Cyber Science Students Visit State Department Ahead of International Competition

A group of our Cyber Dons, accompanied by Loyola Blakefield Director of Cyber Science Mr. Steve Morrill and Mr. Andy Flood, P '25, had the opportunity to visit with Ambassador Nate Fick '95 at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC, yesterday. Nate is the first Ambassador at Large for Cyberspace and Digital Policy. Ambassador Fick was able to share his journey from Loyola Blakefield, to college, to his service in the U.S. military, to founding and leading a cybersecurity business, and now his role at the State Department. He provided tremendous perspective into the global role that cybersecurity plays.

"During our conversation, it was clear that we have a shared mission to educate as many as possible about their digital hygiene and continue to create a more qualified digital workforce," said Mr. Morrill. "Our sincere thanks to the Ambassador for his time."

Between October 26–31, several of our Dons, accompanied by Mr. Morrill and Mr. Flood, are headed to the country of Estonia for the Cyber Battle of Estonia, a cyber competition that sets teams from around Europe against each other in the spirit of growing interest for cybersecurity in young people.

Our Dons were invited to participate in this competition thanks to the U.S. Cyber Command DreamPort Cyber Innovation Program, a project of non-profit and NSA civilian organization Maryland Innovation & Security Institute (MISI). Special thanks to Mr. Armando Seay, co-founder and member of the Board of Directors at MISI, for helping to make this trip possible for our Dons.

Best of luck to Anshul Chelapurath '23, Jack Wachter '24, Matthew Fleschner '21, Teddy Marine '24, and Jake Sanft '19 who are participating in this trip. The team will also be making stops in Estonia's capital city of Tallinn and second-largest city of Tartu to meet with educators, dignitaries, and other students.
