American Politics Club Hosts Forum on Recent National Anthem Debate

The newly formed American Politics Club (merged from the Young Republicans and Young Democrats Clubs) hosted a forum after school on September 27, inviting all students, faculty, and staff, regardless of political labels, to speak their minds on the recent protests by NFL players during the National Anthem. It was a great way for our students to deal with a difficult conversation in a safe environment.

"Our club is committed to the sanctity of our First Amendment rights and constructive discourse regarding hot-button issues," said Club Moderator and Director of Alumni Relations Pat Muth '99, who also quoted Fr. Bryan Massingale, a professor at Fordham University, who summed up this sentiment beautifully:

"Difficult conversations are the norm of these institutions (Jesuit schools). Maybe we should have an academic Miranda warning, ‘If you are here, this is what you’re signing up for: Sloppy, messy conversations are the norm, and we’re going to provide the incubator to make that happen. This is who we are.’”

The American Politics Club at Loyola Blakefield commits to the First Amendment right to free speech by fostering constructive discourse between varying political viewpoints.  Whether Republican, Democrat, Independent, or non-affiliated, our members are Dons who eschew violence, and engage in consequential and politically-charged discussions in search of practical solutions to complex societal ills.
