Varsity Water Polo Captures Second at 2017 Easterns

Varsity Water Polo traveled to Episcopal Academy for the 2017 Eastern Prep High School Water Polo Championship this past weekend.

In their first game, the Dons defeated Episcopal Academy 6–4. Loyola was up 4–1 early on, but Episcopal Academy shut down the Dons in the second half, sending the game into overtime at 4–4. Loyola scored two quick goals in OT for the win.

Two hours later, the varsity squad faced a well-rested Germantown Academy, but senior Tiernan Bruner had too much fire power, notching 4 goals in the 10–7 win.

In the championship match, with just one hour of rest, the Dons faced #1 seed Malvern Prep. At this point Loyola was running on fumes and went down 9–1 by halftime. They lost the match 16–3, and finished the tournament second overall. The All-Eastern Prep players for Loyola included seniors Tiernan Brunner, Brandon Elliott, and Benjamin Shropshire.

Varsity Water Polo finished its season with a solid 16–5 record and second place finishes at both the MIAA Championship and the Eastern Prep Championship. "The guys played well throughout the entire season, and it came down to the wire," said Head Coach Keith Schertle, in reference to the close MIAA Championship on Oct. 28. "We felt like we were the better team there, but to McDonogh's credit, they fought back and beat us 10–9, scoring the winning goal with 29 seconds left in the game."
