Gene Ubriaco Named Head Coach of Loyola Blakefield Lacrosse

Gene Ubriaco has been named Loyola Blakefield’s new Head Lacrosse Coach. He follows in the footsteps of Ben Rubeor ’04, who announced in November 2017 that the 2018 season would be his last. Ubriaco takes over a program that has made it to the semifinal round of the prestigious MIAA ‘A’ Conference playoffs the past two years. “I know Gene from competing against him as a player and a coach, said Rubeor. “His teams are always prepared, smart, and skilled. His success over the last 20 years in the MIAA speaks for itself.”

Ubriaco, who has more than 20 years of experience in various roles at independent schools, will also serve as a middle school mathematics instructor. His tenure at Loyola will commence at the start of the 2018-19 school year. “I am humbled and honored to be joining the Loyola community,” said Ubriaco. “As a teacher, I am thrilled to be joining the faculty at the middle school level. From my experience, middle school boys are extremely eager learners, which makes the classroom experience invigorating. From a coaching perspective, Loyola is an incredible place to take on the challenge of leading a nationally competitive lacrosse program. I’m excited to meet the boys and begin working toward the various ways we’ll measure success as a team, both on and off of the field.”

A product of Boys’ Latin School of Maryland, Ubriaco received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at Loyola University and was a member of the men’s lacrosse team. He has most recently served as Associate Head Coach of the varsity lacrosse team at Boys’ Latin, where he was named the 2014 Lacrosse Assistant Coach of the Year and was part of a coaching staff that helped garner two national championships and three MIAA league titles.

“Gene’s experience in the classroom and on the field make him an excellent leader of our lacrosse program, as well as an outstanding ambassador of our mission,” said John Marinacci, Principal at Loyola. “As a career educator, he understands the importance of leading by example, fostering a culture of servant leadership, and promoting a positive learning and playing environment.”

Ubriaco’s first coaching experience came as Offensive Coordinator for the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team. After Delaware he returned to Boys’ Latin where he has spent the majority of his teaching career as a middle school level mathematics and history teacher. He has also assisted in coaching ice hockey and football. He has additional experience working at St. Paul’s School, where he served as Assistant Director of Admissions, Director of Alumni Affairs, and Offensive Coordinator for the varsity lacrosse team.

In addition to his undergraduate studies at Loyola University, Ubriaco is currently completing a Masters of Coaching Education degree from Ohio University. He and his wife, Gina, reside in Millersville with their three children, Emma (19), Michael (18), and Izzy (13).
