Highlights from our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Assembly
On Monday, January 29th, Loyola Blakefield honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and celebrated African-American heritage with an assembly that featured original performances from students who are actors, musicians, orators, poets, vocalists, and visual artists.
Woven into these performances was a call to action from the keynote speaker, Tyree Williams-Jackson '18, and the panel board (consisting of Upper School Principal Brian Maraña '00, Hunter Simms '25, and Tyree Williams-Jackson '18) for our school community to emulate the characteristics that Dr. King embodied: respect, nonviolence, and commitment to social justice.
The assembly opened with a video montage of "What is a Don?" and an introduction from Isaac Koffi-Moyet '25, followed by a student-led rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing".
Eli Eib '26 gave an update on the planning of this year's Justice Summit theme of “Showing the Way to God" before our student musicians came back up for a performance of "One Love".
Mr. Tyree Williams Jackson '18, served as the keynote speaker, as well as a part of a panel including Mr. Brian Marana '00 and Hunter Simms '25.
Finally, the assembly wrapped up with a spoken word performance by Zion Zackery '25, accompanied by Adam Zhou '25.
At the end of the assembly the DEIB Committee awarded our first-annual Loyola Blakefield Innovations in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Award. This award recognizes persons in our community who have not only championed diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, but also who have taken purposeful, and tangible actions that have resulted in increased understanding and positive outcomes in achieving diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in our school community. Congratulations to Mr. Justin White and Mr. Ryan Medina for this well-deserved recognition!
