Meet Joey

FEATURING:

Joey Cuomo '26

Loyola’s focus on faith was the driving force behind Joey Cuomo’s decision to attend Blakefield and as the founding member of the Christian Life Community on campus, it’s no surprise he was honored with the Tommy P. Oswald Award at the end of the school year. This accolade is bestowed upon a Loyola Don who demonstrates commitment to community, school spirit, academic studies, and faith. Next year, Joey will serve as VP of Service in the Student Government Association, and looks forward to supporting efforts towards the Service and Justice Committee, the food pantry, blood drive, and SGA forums.

Joey attributes his love of service to his mom who is a nurse and works at their church. He recalls, “during COVID she worked long shifts serving and helping others.”  As a result of Joey’s involvement with service and community outreach he was invited to attend the Ever to Excel summer retreat at Boston College. Joey shared, “the experience was life changing and transformative.”

When it comes to academics, Joey admits that math wasn’t exactly his favorite subject and that his first math test was a real eye opener for him. But instead of shrinking from the challenge, he hit it head-on and quickly turned things around by getting extra help from his teacher, Ms. Gayle Smith. For the last three years he’s met her once a week before school and has done well ever since. He is grateful for her time and support.

Joey’s favorite thing about being a Don is “seeing people out in public with Loyola attire and making that unspoken connection.” If he had to name a second, it would be playing rugby against Calvert Hall and winning on their turf. As a member of the Varsity football team, he will always look back fondly on playing in the Turkey Bowl.

Fortunately for our community we have Joey for another year, however he is already thinking about college and possibly majoring in Theology and Finance. As he ponders his future career, he says, “maybe I’ll work in wealth management and then switch to campus ministry. I could even see myself as President of Loyola Blakefield one day!”

Fun Fact: Joey is a Minnesota Vikings fan!
