Chris Herren Visits Campus to Talk About Addiction & Substance Abuse

On Thursday, Nov. 7, we hosted an assembly featuring Chris Herren. He shared a powerful message with our school community about his struggles with addiction and how he prevailed. "Kids need to understand how this begins, rather than how it ends."

In the wake of his recovery, Mr. Herren has spoken to over one million students and community members, sparking honest discussions on the topics of substance use disorder and wellness. His presentation is powerful and provides an opportunity for thoughtful reflection and discussion.

Herren enjoyed success as a college and professional basketball player and also saw his life deeply affected by drug abuse. Since his recovery in 2008, Herrren has authored a book titled Basketball Junkie: A Memoir. Herron travels the country sharing his story about his drug abuse and how he is overcoming it with professional sports teams, universities, colleges, and high school students.

In 2011, ESPN aired a documentary on Herren titled Unguarded. Chris grew his vision of support for others when he founded the nonprofit Herren Project. Through the organization, Chris and his team empower schools and communities to make healthy choices, while also guiding families through recovery. In 2018, Chris also founded Herren Wellness, a residential health and wellness program that helps guests lead healthy, substance-free lives.

This presentation was made possible through the generosity of The O’Neil Family Foundation, Inc.
