Coach Anthony Zehyoue Joins Naval Academy Preparatory School Football Staff
After seven seasons leading the Dons football program, Coach Anthony Zehyoue has accepted a position as an assistant coach at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, Rhode Island. Zehyoue joined Loyola in 2015 as a history teacher and served as an assistant on the coaching staff until his appointment as head coach in 2017.
In recent years, Zehyoue has led the Dons football program to two Turkey Bowl victories (2021 and 2023) over Calvert Hall, snapping a winless streak that stretched back to 2013. His overall coaching record at Loyola stands at 38-28.
A dynamic classroom instructor, Zehyoue was among three recipients of the 2023 Marcus S. Ryu '91 Employee Recognition Award, which recognizes the highest talent within the faculty and staff of Loyola Blakefield.
“I want to thank Anthony Zehyoue for his nine years of service as a teacher and coach at Loyola Blakefield,” said Blake Henry ’98, Director of Athletics. “His impact on the Loyola community has been tremendous. He led our football program back into the MIAA A conference in 2022 and to the conference semifinals this past season. A true servant-leader, he has mentored hundreds of students and football players during his tenure while also developing a substantial number of players who have gone on to play at the collegiate level. Above all, he has served as an example to our young men as to what it means to be a man for others. We will miss Coach Zehyoue and wish him luck in this next stage of his coaching career. The search for the next head varsity football coach will begin immediately.”
In his message to students and families of the football program, Zehyoue expressed the following sentiments as he makes his transition to NAPS.
“In 2015, I showed up at 500 Chestnut Avenue not knowing anyone and will depart Loyola with a multitude of lifelong relationships and wonderful memories formed in the classroom, on the field, and throughout various events in the community. I have had the privilege of seeing nine classes of Dons graduate from Loyola Blakefield during my tenure. I am most proud to say that these classes, along with our current Dons players, are filled with current and future family and community leaders — people who I know will make great contributions to bettering our world. While I will formally be departing the Loyola community, I continue to believe in its mission and vision for developing young men and will continue to support and promote Loyola Blakefield far and wide. I remain very proud and thankful to have played a small part in this beautiful, tradition-filled community.”
