Meet Matthew

FEATURING:

Matthew Johnson '24
“[My friends] were becoming smarter and more disciplined because of their experience as Dons.”

Matthew was drawn to Loyola when he saw his friends thriving in the community. “They were becoming smarter and more disciplined because of their experience as Dons.” But entering as a freshman during the pandemic made for a difficult transition. “Although I knew names, I was finally able to make friends when we were back in person sophomore year.”

Matthew wanted to get involved and thought basketball was going to be his sport, but his journey took him in a different direction. He began weightlifting and building body mass following his sophomore year, after which he joined the track team as a shot putter. Remarkably, last year he broke the school record that had stood for over 20 years with a throw of 48 feet 3 inches. But Matthew doesn’t want his record to stand for two decades. Rather, he wants to be known as the “former record holder” after the next few seasons when he hopes one of his teammates will surpass him in this event as they go on to win the MIAA Championship.
Matthew appreciates how caring Loyola is as a community and enjoys interacting with his teachers. His favorite parts of the day are his free periods catching up with friends and, of course, track practice. As he reflects on his time as a Don, he appreciates the balance he struck between getting involved but not overworking himself. This balance has ensured a memorable experience that he will always appreciate.

Matthew will spend several weeks visiting family in India this summer before setting off for the University of Maryland this fall. He is excited for academics, intramural sports, and exploring what clubs they offer. Matthew seems ready for it all and we are so proud of his accomplishments!
