DONS COMPETE IN LOCAL ORATORY COMPETITIONS

During February, juniors Zach Bollinger and Damian Stifter represented Loyola Blakefield while competing in local oratory and poetry contests.

On Sunday, February 26, at the Reginald Lewis Museum, Damian finished fourth out of 20 semifinalists in the 24th Annual WJZ Black History Oratory Competition. The 20 semifinalists presented their memorized orations based on inspirational quotes from Harriet Tubman, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Dr. Carla Hayden. This competition was open to all high school students who live in Maryland.

Zach was the school’s representative in the Wild Card Regional for the Maryland Poetry Out Loud Competition sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council on Saturday, February 18. Zach was one of nine regional finalists at the competition, the winner earning a right to compete at the state level. While he didn’t win, he did an impressive job reciting his two poems: “Analysis of Baseball” by May Swenson and “Dover Beach” by Matthew Arnold. Zach defeated about 125 students here at Loyola to win the school-wide competition back in early December.
