Meet Hunter

FEATURING:

Hunter Simms '25

Hunter Simms is a renaissance man in every sense of the word, excelling in the classroom, on the stage, and serving others. As an Ignatian Honors student his love for reading, writing, and dynamic class discussion has been nurtured and challenged. His favorite part about being a Don is the access to teachers and how, no matter what the subject, “each class taps into a different part of me.” Hunter’s favorite subject is English because it gives him the opportunity to write and collaborate with teachers on his work, and to explore the “beauty of communication and storytelling instilled in him by his grandmother”.

Inspired by his involvement in the Fischer program and his conversations with Mr. Bowers the summer before freshman year, Hunter hit the ground running with co-curricular activities at Loyola. His acting career has spanned an impressive 11 plays, with the Blakefield Players, his favorite role being that of Ed Boone in the dark comedy The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. Additionally, Hunter is vice president of the Black Student Union, a peer educator, and has contributed to the Justice Summitt. Most recently he earned an award for excellence in his Journeying with Youth Honors class.

With service being an integral part of a Loyola education, Hunter took full advantage and traveled to Belize on a service trip. After they unplugged from their phones, to totally immerse themselves entirely in the experience, he and his fellow Dons built homes for low-income families. According to him, this experience changed his perspective on solidarity, “showing it’s not just about being a man for others but being a man with others as well.”

Hunter’s legacy is kindness and authenticity. He has truly exemplified what you can achieve when you take advantage of all that Loyola has to offer and he wants to be remembered as “someone who is focused, knows who he is and what he is doing.”

In the fall, Hunter will attend North Carolina A&T University as an English major with a concentration in pre-law. He is the recipient of A&T’s Lewis and Elizabeth Dowdy Scholarship and a member of the University’s Honors Program. Hunter is a remarkable young man, and it is a privilege to know him.

Fun Fact: Hunter loves to cook and makes dinner for his family three nights a week!
