Henry Erdman '19 Qualifies for National Round of Chemistry Olympiad

Henry Erdman '19 has once again advanced to the National Round of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. He is one of only 15 outstanding high school students to advance from the Maryland Section of the American Chemical Society and the only representative from a Catholic or private school.

He will now take the national exam with the hopes of qualifying to become a member of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad team that will compete in the 50th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) competition in Prague, Czech Republic in July. The IChO involves a series of theoretical exams, laboratory exercises, and other activities aimed at identifying the best chemistry students from participating nations from around the world.

Henry cites chemistry as his favorite subject and is currently enrolled in AP Chemistry. "I like sciences as a whole because you get a mix of theoretic elements, as well as practical applications," said Erdman. "I think chemistry blends those the best."

Given his experience in the national round last year, he knows that preparation is key, but that the exam is meant to surprise you as well. "For the lab portion, we were given five clear solutions and we had to match them to five chemical names by performing a few basic mixtures," said Erdman. "Mrs. Pongchit has been a tremendous resource for me as I take on the this challenge and I'm waiting to see what comes my way in the next round."

Henry is an active member of the Cyber Science Program, co-leader of the Chess Club, and competes on the Cross Country and Outdoor Track & Field teams. Please join us in congratulating him for once again making it to this prestigious round and wishing him luck on the national exam on April 14th.
