Cross Country Goes Back-to-Back

Our Varsity Cross Country team successfully defended the MIAA 'A' Conference Championship with a narrow 2-point win over Calvert Hall at McDaniel College yesterday. The Dons completed a sweep of league competition, going undefeated in dual meets during the regular season.

The team placed three runners in the top six overall in the race with seniors Camden Gilmore, Ronan Sullivan, and Kyle Clarke finishing in the 2, 3, and 6 spots, but barely held off a rapidly improving Calvert Hall team as the battle for the 4 and 5 spots was tight. Senior Connor Verrett and junior Hayden Roberts did their jobs hanging close to Cardinals' 4 and 5 runners, although each was battling the competition and a bug.

Coach Jose Albornoz said of his 16 league titles, this may have been the toughest yet. "Four of our top five guys were battling colds this week. We we're not one-hundred percent at race time. At four kilometers, we were comfortably ahead, but that last kilometer over some tough hills really affected us. The boys fought right until the end, and that made the difference."

With two weeks to train until their last race, the Dons hope to be fit and healthy to end the season against some of the best in the country at the Nike Cross Regional meet in Cary, NC.
