Varsity Cross Country, formed in 1973 by Brother Paul Cawthorne, S.J., is currently in its 52nd season at Loyola Blakefield. The team enters the 2024 season with a new look. Graduating 4 of the top 5 runners in the program, the varsity team is hoping to rebuild quickly. Juniors Liam Stappert and Patrick Bradley will lead the way followed by a rapidly improving group of veteran runners to include Seniors Nick LaGreca, Matt Lingenfelter, and Danny Sentz. Sophomores Auggie Brown and Jacob Tsakalos may also find their way into the top 7 as the season progresses.
Head Coach Jose Albornoz is now in his 40th year with the program. In his time at Loyola, Coach Albornoz’s teams have won 18 MIAA/MSA championships -and are the defending A Conference Dual Meet Champs- to bring the program's total championships to 19 since its inception. In 2020, Coach Albornoz was named Varsity Sports Network Co-Coach of the Decade (2010-2019) with Josh Alcombright (Severna Park). Coach Albornoz was named The Baltimore Sun Metro Coach of the Year (1989) and Baltimore County Coach of the Year (1997, 2003 and 2005) in previous seasons.
While all athletes, including novices, are welcome, highly motivated athletes should prepare for the upcoming season by logging summer mileage. Students prepared for the fall will be able to handle 25 miles per week to begin the season at August tryouts. Students should be able to handle a pace from 7 to 7:30 minutes per mile. Varsity candidates will be able to handle 40+ miles per week at 6 to 6:45 per mile pace. Varsity and JV run in the MIAA 'A' Conference at a distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) each race.
In addition to cross country, Loyola offers opportunities in Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field. Students may try out for the team after being cut from other sports. The cross country team welcomes those athletes at any time in the weeks following final cuts. All students are encouraged to consider the running programs at Loyola.

Loyola Md.milesplit #4
After winning the MIAA Cross Country Championship last week, the Don's have moved up the rankings from #6 to #4, just 2 pts out of 3rd.
The team has two more races left this season. A week from Saturday we travel to NY to compete in the Jesuit Championships. One week later we go to North Carolina to run in the NXN Southeast Regional against some of the best teams in the country.All-Maryland Boys

MIAA Championship Meet Weds Nov 1
Yesterday, Loyola cross country won a closs meet against Mount Saint Joesph 27-28. With a 5-1 record going into Wednesday's championship, Loyola is tied with MSJ and Gilman in championship pionts. Wednesday's winner will be the league champion.
The Don's are looking to put 4 runners into the top 10 and all 7 in the top 25 for Wednesday's race. This year's race could be the closest among top teams in years. Calvert Hall and St. Paul's will also be in the mix with some top runners hoping to be spoilers.
Meet begins at 2:45pm on Nov 1 at Oregon Ridge park with the open race to follow at 3:20.

Dual Meet Wins on Senior Day
Led by a 1-2 finsh from Camden Gilmore (16:14) and Connor Verrett (16:38), Loyola easily won against St. Paul's, 21-36, placing 5 runners before the Crusaders #3. Kyle Clarke finished under 17 minutes with at time of 16:52. Rounding out the scoring were Paul Macdonald and Ronan Sullivan.
The Don's shut out Curley in the double dual meet 15 - 48. Junior Matt Hanley and Seniors Dan Quets and Aganze Nkere all finished under 18 min on a warm day at Blakefield.
Next up for the #5 ranked Dons, the Westminster Invite on Saturday.
