Requiescat in pace: Rev. James F. Salmon, S.J.

Born on July 10, 1925, in Richmond Hill, NY, Fr. Salmon lived a remarkable life of faith, service, and leadership. Before entering the Society of Jesus, he served honorably in the United States Navy and later worked for four years as a foundry engineer with the International Nickel Company. He entered the Jesuit Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, PA on September 7, 1950, was ordained a priest on June 14, 1964, at Woodstock College, and took his final vows on February 2, 1979. View obituary from the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus.

At Loyola Blakefield, Fr. Salmon served as President/Headmaster from 1973 to 1979, guiding the school through a critical transitional period. During his tenure, he established Loyola’s first Development Department, laying the foundation for the fundraising efforts that continue to support our mission today.

In 1979, the yearbook staff honored Fr. Salmon with a heartfelt dedication. Click here to read their tribute along with his message to the graduating class.

His legacy continues to be honored through the Rev. James F. Salmon, S.J. Award, established in 2018, which recognizes individuals or families whose generosity has made a tremendous impact on Loyola. In addition, a special Commencement award bearing his name is presented each year to a graduate who has demonstrated leadership in student activities and excellence in both Science and Religious Studies.

We give thanks for Fr. Salmon’s century of life, his priestly ministry, and his unwavering dedication to the Society of Jesus.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
