Emmett’s talents span from computer science to playing the oboe, with a lot in between. “I see cyber as a career with a definitive purpose of helping to protect people and information and music provides a way for me to express myself.” Emmett is this year’s recipient of the Semper Fidelis Award and is also a Knott Scholar. A genuine academic in the classroom, Emmett appreciates that it is ok to have differing opinions and healthy class discussions as he recalled from Mr. Harris’s philosophy class, “we learned so much from having different opinions and ideas and sharing them with one another.”
Last summer, he and five other Cyber Dons went to Thailand with Mr. Morrill for a Thai military exercise along with teams from Cambodia, Australia, and several other countries. Loyola’s two squads came in a remarkable 3rd and 6th place among 77 teams. Emmett really appreciates the way Mr. Morrill goes way beyond being a teacher and encourages his students to keep on learning.
Emmett was initially drawn to Loyola because “it’s not flashy and presents in an authentic way.” His favorite part about being a Don is “the different ways you can get involved and help others…and the churros were delicious too!” He also reflects fondly on his service trip to West Virgina when he worked on Bethlehem Farms helping to fix rooves and pitching in with farm work. For Emmett this was an integral part of his time as a Don.
In the fall, Emmett will attend the University of Maryland to continue following his love of computer science and music. We wish him much success and happiness!
Fun Fact: “I can read while I walk, and I haven’t ever run into anyone. (Yet.)”
