Varsity Volleyball Returns to the Top

On Friday, November 7th, Loyola Volleyball swept Gilman School in straight sets to claim the MIAA 'A' Conference Championship—the program’s first title since 2019 and its ninth overall, the most in conference history. The Dons completed a perfect 15–0 season, capping off a year defined by balance, discipline, and unity.
Led by seniors Brooks Peterson, Connor Floyd, Mikey Boyle, and Lucas Heinze, Loyola’s veteran core set the tone early, while younger players stepped up in big moments throughout the season. Senior setter Bryce Llewellyn reflected on the team’s confidence heading into the final: “We knew this was our year.”
Head Coach Tim Baier credited his players’ relentless focus and aggressive serving strategy for their dominant postseason run. “They trusted each other completely,” Baier said. “This group played for something bigger than themselves—every point, every set.”
With the victory, Loyola reclaims its spot atop the MIAA volleyball hierarchy and reaffirms the program’s tradition of excellence and camaraderie.
Varsity Soccer Secures the Three-Peat
Photo credit: Zac Rineer '22Just two days later, the Varsity Soccer Dons made history of their own, defeating McDonogh School 1–0 at Loyola University Maryland’s Ridley Athletic Complex to earn its third consecutive MIAA 'A' Conference Championship.
The lone goal came late in the first half when senior forward William Sharpe headed home a cross from Will Wnek, assisted by George Forakis. The Dons’ defense held strong for the remainder of the match, shutting down a potent McDonogh attack that had entered the championship match on a 10-game unbeaten streak.
What makes this year’s title particularly remarkable is the context: Loyola entered the season with a new head coach, Lucas Winters, and only three returning starters from last year’s championship squad. Despite the turnover, the Dons demonstrated resilience, maturity, and a championship mindset that never wavered.
The win marks Loyola’s sixth MIAA 'A' Conference soccer championship overall and solidifies the Dons as one of the most consistent programs in Maryland high school athletics.
Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches, and supporters who played a role in this unforgettable weekend for Loyola Blakefield!
