Whether he’s solving equations in AP Physics class, helping to run an SGA forum, cheering with the Boosters Club, running field day with the Best Buddies program, stocking the food pantry, or defending on the lacrosse field, James has been a constant presence on campus. According to him, “We have a well-educated and caring class of young men going to many prestigious colleges.” And James is certainly one of them, as he will be attending MIT in the fall with a focus on Biology and Pre-Med.
James is the third Don in his family to graduate from Loyola. “When I saw the experiences, my brothers had and the friendships they made, it was an easy choice for my next step.” James credits teachers like Mr. Baier with challenging students in his Physics class by allowing them to take ownership of the class. “The discourse allows for so much learning to take place.” As a Knott Scholar, Carson Scholar, AOB Scholar, State Merit Scholastic Award recipient, and the George F. Helfrich Medal for outstanding achievement in the Math Department, you might think that James spends all his time studying. To the contrary, his talents and interests stretch well beyond the classroom, and his proudest accomplishment is the work he did as VP of Service for the past two years. Thanks to James, the Fall canned food drive evolved into a year-round food pantry for St. Gregory the Great Church in Baltimore City. He helped lead Loyola towards contributing over 25,000 food items this school year!
For James, the lacrosse field has become a second home to him, and some of his favorite moments of the day are the times he is hanging out in the locker room before or after a game with his teammates. James said that Coach Haus led the team to focus on both developing as a lacrosse player and as a person for others. James has served as a sacristan at every school Mass and the Baccalaureate Masses for the past two years. He also served as a Lead Sacristan and small group leader for the past three years at his church, the Church of the Nativity.
James finished his career at Loyola, earning the Rev. Father Lloyd D. George, S.J. Award for highest grade point average through the mid-point of his senior year. He is most proud to have been awarded the Dan McNeal Memorial Scholarship Award to honor Dan’s legacy and commitment to being a true Don and Man of Others. James has set a stellar example of what it means to be a Don and what it looks like to craft your own experience at Loyola, and his impact will continue to help others for years to come.
We wish James much success and happiness as he navigates his life’s next adventure!
This summer, James is very much looking forward to working as an EMT alongside his older brother Peter, Class of 2021.
Fun Fact: James became an uncle and Godfather last year!
