In Loving Memory of J. Joseph “Joe” Brune, Jr. ’52

Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends,

It is with deep sorrow that I share the news of the passing of J. Joseph “Joe” Brune, Jr. ’52—beloved teacher, coach, mentor, and friend—whose influence is woven into the very character and spirit of Loyola Blakefield.

A proud Don from the Class of 1952, Joe returned to Blakefield in 1967 to begin what would become a remarkable 35-year career as Head Football Coach and English teacher. In both arenas, he shaped generations of young men, urging them toward excellence, humility, and integrity. Under his leadership, Loyola football secured five MSA/MIAA Conference Titles and 19 unforgettable Turkey Bowl victories—accomplishments that reflect not only his strategic brilliance, but the discipline, accountability, and heart he instilled in every player who wore the Blue & Gold. His legacy is captured beautifully on the plaque beside his bust overlooking Hargaden Field, dedicated in 2015:

"A coach who preached hard work, dedication, and accountability – Few have loved Loyola more."

Yet Joe’s gifts extended far beyond the gridiron. As an English teacher and former Head of the English Department, he guided students with the same care and conviction that defined his coaching. He believed deeply in the power of language, of story, and of each student’s ability to grow into their fullest potential. As a college counselor, he offered steady encouragement and wise counsel to young men navigating one of the most formative moments of their lives, helping them discern their paths beyond Blakefield.

In recognition of his exceptional leadership and devotion to the school he loved, Joe was inducted into the Maryland Football Coaches Hall of Fame (1999) and became a member of the Inaugural Class of the Loyola Blakefield Hall of Fame (2002). He received Loyola’s highest alumni honor—the Rev. Joseph M. Kelley, S.J. Medal—in 2010.

Central to the fullness of Joe’s life was his cherished partnership with his wife, Sheila, whose own 36-year career at Loyola stands as a testament to their shared commitment to our community. Their love story began with a blind date in 1960—arranged by Joe’s sister—and blossomed into a lifelong union rooted in faith, friendship, and devotion. They married the following summer and raised seven children together, including two Loyola alumni, Sean ’86 and Colin ’92. Joe is also the brother of David Brune ’58.

On a personal note, having joined the Loyola community only two years ago, I was immediately struck by the depth of Joe’s legacy and the genuine warmth and humility he carried so naturally. It has been a true honor to know him, and to get to know his family. We will share wake and funeral details with our community as soon as they are finalized.

Loyola Blakefield extends our heartfelt prayers and deepest sympathies to Sheila, their children, grandchildren, and all who were touched by Joe’s extraordinary life and legacy. May we honor him by carrying forward the values he championed so faithfully.
