SERVICE COMMITTEE HOSTS REFUGEE EXPERIENCE FOR LOYOLA BLAKEFIELD COMMUNITY

On Tuesday, May 16, the Loyola Blakefield Service Committee, in collaboration with Jesuit Refugee Services, put together a refugee experience in The Hollow called Walk a Mile in My Shoes. The simulation was designed to allow members of the Loyola Blakefield community to walk through and reflect on the experiences of displaced people and refugees around the world. Currently, there are over 65 million people who are displaced from their homes. Our students organized the entire experience to raise awareness of the global refugee crisis taking place, as well as our current immigration process.

Students, faculty, and staff were invited to walk through a variety of stations to learn what it means to be displaced, the reasons for displacement, and the conditions of refugee camps. Each station addressed a topic relevant to the refugee crisis such as border control, shelter, food, water, health & hygiene, and education. There was also a station where students were encouraged to take action and advocate for refugees as well as a station dedicated to personal stories of immigration from members of our community.
