On Tuesday, April 28, the Loyola Blakefield community gathered for its annual Awards Assembly, a celebration of the dedication, leadership, and accomplishments of students across all areas of study. The event recognized young men who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence, service, leadership, athletics, and commitment to the values of a Catholic, Jesuit education.
Throughout the morning, students were honored for the hard work and perseverance they have demonstrated throughout the school year. Faculty and administrators presented awards that reflected the many ways Loyola students strive for excellence both inside and outside the classroom.
The assembly also featured a special address from distinguished alumnus Marcus Ryu '91, who returned to campus to share reflections on his Loyola experience and the lessons that have shaped his personal and professional journey. A successful entrepreneur and venture capitalist in Silicon Valley, Ryu spoke candidly about ambition, gratitude, discipline, and character.
Ryu encouraged students to embrace impatience in the best sense of the word — as a sense of urgency to pursue meaningful goals and make the most of their opportunities. He reminded students that “every second matters,” challenging them to use their time wisely and to approach life with purpose.
At the same time, he emphasized the importance of gratitude and perspective, reflecting on his family’s immigrant story and the opportunities made possible through education, hard work, and the freedoms available in the United States. He urged students not to take those blessings for granted, but instead to recognize the advantages before them and use them well.
In closing, Ryu offered a powerful message on what it means to be a man of character. He encouraged students to be builders and providers, to keep their word, and to master themselves in a world full of distraction. His remarks strongly echoed Loyola Blakefield’s mission of forming Men for Others.
The Awards Assembly served as both a celebration of student achievement and a meaningful reminder of the values that guide a Loyola education. Congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients, and thank you to Marcus Ryu ’91 for returning to campus to inspire the next generation of Dons.
