Highlights from 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly
We celebrated our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly on Monday, January 30.
We celebrated our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly on Monday, January 30, as our entire school community was honored to be joined by several of our African American alumni including Kenneth Montague '60, Carl Stokes '68, Erich March '70, Ralph Moore '70, Ronald Richardson '71, Victor March '74, Stan Mosley '75, Andre Sanders '78, Bernie Bowers '78, Victor March Jr. '94, Keith Penn-Jones '07, and Curtis Stubbs '12.
The assembly opened with a rendition of King's "I Have a Dream" speech by Nathaniel Jackson '23, BSU president Greg Jones '23, and Cam Norman '25, followed by a welcome address from BSU historian Maurice Ghee '24 and prayer from Dilon Mack '27.
Charlie Kay '23 detailed King's vision of walking with the excluded, while Declan Bell '24 and Kenny Tyler '25 hosted a special tribute for the African American alumni in attendance.
Hunter Simms '25 read an excerpt from King's "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech and provided his own reflection. BSU middle school liaison Zion Zackery '24 also performed two of his original poems, accompanied by Joseph Balto '23 on the piano.
Our 2015 Kelley Medal Award recipient, Mr. Erich March '70, served as the keynote speaker.
Special thanks to Mr. Bowers, Ms. Cherre Jefferson, Ms. Misha Holmes, and our entire Black Student Union for organizing such a wonderful tribute to Dr. King.
