  Chinese History

  This full credit course is designed to be a broad overview of Chinese history and culture. The course begins with the Sage Kings and prehistoric China and ends with the rise of a new global superpower at the dawn of the 21st Century.  Each period of Chinese history will be addressed, but a clear focus will be on the developments from the dawn of the modern era through the present day.  The course will explore the key themes central to understanding Chinese history, society, and culture, with special focus on the key ideas that have driven the Chinese people from its earliest days. Studying Chinese history will also expose students to an unfamiliar culture, different ways of viewing the world, and serves as a challenge to a Western or American centric view of history.  
  
  

  The course will be taught virtually and in-person by Mr. Sam Manelski. The course is open to rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. Students must be available for the entire course. 
   
  Students may also choose to enroll in this course as an honors level course.  Students who decide to take the honors track will complete additional course work and an expanded final assessment. 

  
  Abstract Math Course

  Cost: $900

  
  This course is the equivalent of a full-year, honors-level course in abstract mathematics. It is designed for highly motivated students who have completed Precalculus and are eager to challenge themselves beyond the standard curriculum. Students will explore a diverse range of advanced topics, including number theory, quaternions, abstract algebra, graph theory, and game theory. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on developing students’ ability to construct clear, rigorous mathematical proofs while gaining exposure to higher-level mathematical thinking. In addition, the course aims to connect these areas of pure mathematics to real-world applications, demonstrating how pursuing mathematics for its own sake can lead to meaningful impact. Applications will be drawn from fields such as computer science, political science, philosophy, and others. The course provides both a strong foundation in proof-writing for mathematics competitions and an introduction to topics beyond the traditional applied curriculum. Daily homework will be assigned, and weekly in-class summative assessments will be administered.
   
  This course will meet Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm from June 8 until July 31, with no class during the week of June 15. Each week of the course is generally self-contained, so students who miss no more than one week are encouraged to enroll and coordinate make-up work with the instructor. However, students who plan to miss intervals of time in multiple different weeks will likely face difficulty in completing the course.

  Geometry Course
  Dates June 8- 17
  Cost: $900

  
  This standard first course in Geometry covers the required concepts of Euclidean Geometry including definitions, postulates, and theorems.  Areas of study include angles, parallel lines, congruent and similar figures, polygons, circles and arcs, and the Pythagorean Theorem.  Special topics covered include coordinate and spatial geometry, introductory trigonometry, areas of two-dimensional figures, and areas and volumes of three-dimensional figures.  In addition, problems are included which serve to review algebra skills.

  
  The course covers the entire college preparatory Geometry curriculum during a five-week period, so it is taught at a highly accelerated pace. Students should expect at least an hour of homework each day. A midterm exam and a final exam will be given. Students should be self-motivated. The course will be taught in-person and attendance is mandatory for the five-week session. The course will be taught by Mr. Drew Barker.

  The Two Cities Religion Course

  The Two Cities will use a humanities-based approach to examine the rich legacy of Catholic political thought throughout human history. We will examine the challenges of Modernity through the lens of the Theologico-Political problem, as well as St. Augustine’s understanding of the “City of Man,” and the “Heavenly City.” The course will underscore the bishops’ call to address how Christ’s mission continues through the Church. Topics may include Justice, natural right, faith and reason, Athens and Jerusalem, Modernity, and Christian Revelation (Divine love).

  
  This is a full credit course and will be taught online through Microsoft Teams by Mr. Jesse Harris. Class will not be held on 7/4 and will be asynchronous on 7/3.

  
  College Essay Writing Workshop

  College application workshops are great summer courses for high school students. Many high school students use the summer season to polish their college applications. After all, you can’t fully plan for college until your application has been submitted and accepted. The summer gives you ample time to work on your college application, preparing each credential thoughtfully to highlight your accomplishments.

  
  Our college application workshop is held for one week in June for rising high school seniors only. You will be guided through the process of how to write an excellent application essay. During these lessons, the instructors will assist you with outlining, developing, and revising the essay. You will be offered writing expertise and constructive feedback to improve the quality of your essay.

  
  Our goal is to help students craft a substantial application essay that will truly impress colleges. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have at least one completed college application essay under your belt. You will also gain insights into the application process, which can be invaluable for your journey towards college.

  Take advantage of this convenient way to complete your driver's education on the campus of Loyola Blakefield. Conducted by Roland Park Driving School, this state certified program is a two-week session. This 36-hour course includes 30 hours of classroom training and theory, as well as six hours of driving instruction. The course also includes free pick-up from home or Loyola Blakefield for the driving portion of the program.

  For kids that know the basic rules of chess but would like to advance their game. Participants will be introduced to tournament style play.  Instruction will begin with a quick recap of special moves and draw situations. This includes castling and en passant.   Like riding your bike in the woods? Want to take your bike skills to the next level? Whether you ride all the time or just like to play in the woods, join our staff for a week of mountain bike camp at local area trails. Climb better and descend with more control. Learn how to shift more efficiently, brake properly and just ride with more confidence. Great attention will be paid to fundamental skills, body position, as well as basic bicycle and trail maintenance. Develop an appreciation for the outdoors in a fun and safe environment with our staff.

  
  Mr. Keeney II and Mr. Glorioso have a combined 38 years of experience in middle and high school teaching. They run the Loyola Climbing Club and the Loyola Ski and Snowboard Club. They have been running outdoor clubs and camps for the last decade respectively and look forward to working with your child(ren) during this week of camp.

  
  While riding is our main focus in this camp, we realize that we are at the mercy of Mother Nature. Should there be inclement weather, additional activities may be deemed more appropriate.

  Advanced Mountain Biking Camp

  Designed for the more adventurous mountain bikers who ride all the time and want to grow their skills and expand their trail repertoire, this advanced camp goes beyond the basics. We explore different trail systems daily and ride some of the most challenging terrain, covering several miles before and after lunch. Because of the nature of this camp, spots are limited to keep a safe camper to counselor ratios, and we reserve the right to vet all campers prior to acceptance. Riders who have attended our camps in previous years have priority while new camper will be asked to share information and possibly ride with one of our staff prior to acceptance.

  
  Our staff has a combined 40+ years’ experience in education and outdoor recreation. Mr. Keeney and Mr. Glorioso run several outdoor clubs on campus, coach the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League (MICL) race team at Loyola Blakefield as well as their teaching responsibilities. They have been running outdoor clubs and camps for the last two decades respectively and look forward to working with your child(ren) during this week of camp.

  This camp introduces a wide range of skills throughout the week including passing, receiving and de-flagging, with a strong focus on the rules of the game. Each day ends with small-sided games where the coaches encourage good sportsmanship and teamwork.
  Participants will develop an understanding of offensive and defensive plays and be encouraged to implement these skills into realistic scrimmages and gameplay situations.
  
  Flag football summer camp is appropriate for players ranging from beginners to those already well-versed in the sport. Groups are separated by age and ability to ensure all players flourish in a positive learning environment while having a great time! Campers will also play other varieties of the games indoors, outdoors, and in the pool!

  The camp is designed for all levels of players. Campers will learn individual skills, including stick work, footwork, dodging, shooting, and individual defense. In addition, campers will learn team concepts and compete in a number of game-like situations, and they will have the opportunity to earn a number of prizes. The goal of the camp is to inspire players to continue to improve and to teach the concepts that have led Loyola to consistent success. The camp will be directed by Loyola's Varsity Lacrosse Coaching Staff.

  S.C.A.N. (Strength, Conditioning, & Nutrition) Camp (Co-Ed)

  During our two-week sessions, attendees will gain knowledge about how 70% of your fitness is proper nutrition and hydration, participate in weight training, HIIT, circuit and endurance training, yoga, Pilates, speed and agility training, upper and lower body plyometrics, aquatic aerobics and much more. We also take a field trip to the market to learn how to properly shop for your fitness goals in addition to a cooking demo that teaches how you can eat healthy, and it still taste great. 

   

  S.C.A.N. Camp is a co-ed training experience led by Coach Jay, owner of Jay’s Journey Fitness Studio, Nikki Love and Coach Jones. In addition to her role at the Jay’s Journey Fitness Studio, Coach Jay is a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer with advanced credentials as a Certified Nutrition Coach Specialist and currently holds numerous certifications. All attendees will not only receive targeted instruction designed to develop functional strength for their respective sports/activities, but also how proper nutrition and mindset contribute to sustainable progress. Let’s benefit from this wealth of knowledge and spend the rest of the summer transforming into the best version of yourself.

  This wrestling camp is for 6th graders to 12th graders of all ability levels. Younger wrestlers with experience will also be considered. Coach Jones will focus on the techniques that has helped Loyola Blakefield become one of the best wrestling programs in the Mid-Atlantic region. We will focus on improving or refining techniques in the neutral, top and bottom positions as well as the mental aspect of taking your wrestling to the next level. We will also participate in fun activities such as battle ball, grip game, dodgeball, ultimate frisbee and more.

  
  
  

  * AM Half Day Camps are scheduled from 9:00am-12:00pm and PM camps are scheduled from 1:00pm-4:00pm. 
  Lunch is scheduled from 12pm-1pm daily.
  *Lunch is included in the cost of the camp for Full Day Camps.
