Hundreds of members of the Loyola Blakefield community gathered at Camden Yards on Friday for the annual Blakefield Night at the Yard, enjoying an evening of Orioles baseball, school spirit, and a special celebration of one of Loyola’s most beloved longtime faculty members. And the Orioles gave the Loyola crowd plenty to cheer about, topping the Rays 5–3 and snapping a four-game losing streak along the way. 

The evening included plenty to celebrate, as the Orioles defeated the Tampa Bay Rays and the Loyola community came together to recognize Ray Brown ’79 (English), who was honored with the Orioles Heavy Hitter Award. The award recognizes individuals who make a significant impact on their organizations, making it a fitting tribute to someone whose influence at Loyola Blakefield spans generations of Dons.

Brown has been a member of the Loyola faculty since 1984, returning to his alma mater after graduating with the Class of 1979. Over more than four decades, Brown has challenged and inspired generations of students, while as a legendary aquatics coach, he has helped establish and sustain a tradition of excellence in Loyola swimming.

In 2024, Loyola officially recognized Brown for reaching an incredible 40-year milestone of teaching and service to the school. His contributions to Loyola athletics were also recognized when he was inducted into the Loyola Blakefield Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2020, honoring both his accomplishments as a student-athlete and his many contributions to the school in the decades that followed.

For the Loyola community, Brown’s impact extends far beyond the classroom, the pool deck, or any single season. His commitment to his students, athletes, and alma mater has made him a defining part of the Blakefield experience for countless Dons.
