Varsity Indoor Track competes in the best track conference in the area, the MIAA. The team has been very competitive, finishing in the top four for the last eight years with close runner-up finishes twice. The team competes in events in Loyola's Four-Court Gym and at the Prince George's County Sports and Learning Complex. The team takes part in several MIAA-only meets per season, but also competes in local invitationals against some of the best teams and athletes in the mid-Atlantic area. For the last thirteen years, Loyola has been fortunate to qualify at least one athlete and/or relay team to compete in the New Balance Indoor Nationals. This meet is held at the historic Armory Track and Field Center in New York City and gives our student-athletes a chance to compete against the best athletes in the nation.
In recent years, Loyola athletes have done very well in the college ranks. John Davenport '09 had a stellar career at University of Maryland, Matt Jablonski '11 ran four years for the powerhouse Oregon Ducks, Kevin Corbusier '12 ran for Villanova and appeared in the NCAA championships in cross country, Tyler Spear '14 ran for Harvard, Max Barbour ’17 runs for Tennessee, and 2016 graduates Kenny Rowe and Michael Bell have both qualified for the NCAA Track and Field Championships competing for Georgetown and North Carolina A&T, respectively. Rowe will be joined at Georgetown by 2019 graduate Camden Gilmore. Since its inception in 1998, the program has been coached by Chris Cucuzzella and Jose Albornoz. Recent alumnus Matt Azzaro has joined the staff the last two years and brings a wealth of sprint and jump knowledge.
Running is a wonderful sport and lifetime activity and we encourage all students interested in track and field to seek out Mr. Cucuzzella or Mr. Albornoz on campus.
