    Head Coach: Gordon Amato

Loyola's water polo program was conceived in 1997 by former swim team captain Joey Curreri ’98 with the support of then head coach Keith Schertle. In order to purchase the equipment and raise funds for the team, he and nine teammates swam a 100 mile relay continuously while friends, family, and members of the Loyola community donated to Joey’s project of starting what is now Loyola’s water polo team.

Varsity Water Polo competes with schools in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) along with other water polo programs at various tournaments in the Philadelphia and D.C. areas. Varsity has made it to the MIAA championship 15 times in the last 16 years, winning the title in 2009, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2021, and 2024. In addition, the team has captured the Eastern Prep High School Water Polo Championship in 2009, 2013, and 2021. Water Polo players have gone on to play at Iona, George Washington University, Fordham University, and the United States Naval Academy. For years, Loyola has been extremely proud to boast about being the fastest team in the league and works to maintain this tradition annually.

The 2021 water polo team was one of the best teams ever in the MIAA. The team went undefeated and won both the MIAA Championship and the Eastern Prep High School Championship. Players from that year went on to play water polo at the collegiate level. Tanner Turrall went on to play water polo at Pepperdine, Daniel Parr at Cal Lutheran and Luke Shropshire at Whittier. Shropshire was selected by the MIAA as the 2021 Hallisey Varsity Most Outstanding Player of the Championship Game.

Water Polo players have gone on to play at Virginia Tech, UVA, Washington and Jefferson, and many more prestigious programs.
